Last Thursday night I got to see 'Donna The Buffalo' band for the second time. The show was held at the Plaza Live, in Orlando. They had just rolled in from a big hectic stint in Key West where they performed multiple shows a day. After such a grueling schedule and drive you might expect them to be a bit subdued but just like at Magnolia Festival they rocked the house! Band-members include Jeb Puryear (vocals, electric guitar) and Tara Nevins (vocals, guitar, fiddle, accordion, scrubboard) joined by David McCracken (Hammond organ, Honer Clavinet & piano), Kyle Spark (bass) and Mark Raudabaugh on drums). Outside the show I met up with their merchandise rep Jordy putting out a bunch of standard items such a T-shirts and cd's. However there was one item for sale that was very unusual...a ink stamp. The stamp logo and reads phrases like 'Stamp Big $ out of politics', and ' Not 2 be used 2 buy elections'. The group is known for standing up for social injustice in many of their lyrics. The band has joined forces with Ben Cohen, Co-Founder of Ben & Jerry’s who's also been stamping currency for the protest. Many stopped by to purchase the stamps while others like fans Michael and Tina borrowed them to stamp their own money. Jordy, who's been with the band for 17 years said "We've sold about 3,000 of them so far" adding "Most of the response has been positive" except during a stop in Connecticut. Jordy told me with a chuckle he was verbally assaulted by a woman who shouted "I'm part of the one percent!”, which would not seem something to brag about among the "Herd" as they are called. The peculiar incident ended when he as Jordy says he "removed himself from the situation". Thankfully there were no such incidents at the Orlando event which was filled with hippies young and old. They performed a fantastic set for about 2 hours straight and still the crowd yelled for more. Jeb and Tara came back on stage for an intimate acoustic encore number, which thrilled the crowd. if you missed the show and would like to see them for yourself they'll be headed back to Florida to perform at the Virginia Key Grassroots Festival ( Feb 18-21) and Spirit of the Suwannee on March 17th.
